The Line
It's interesting how you can hear something often and then at some point it finally catches your attention. In the song Grandpa, tell me bout the good old days... the phrase, "Line between right and wrong didn't seem so hazy." That line comes before 'a promise was something to be kept and not just said...'
I wonder, have we really sunk so low in our acceptance of right and wrong? My uncle, it has been told, would start a discussion amongst his family (mother, father, siblings) on a controversial topic then sit back while they argued. I would just say he was not doing this to get to a better understanding of the truth.
For quite a number of years we have heard that we should not discuss religion or politics. People have argued and even fought over both of these subjects for years. However, the restraint against talking about these two subjects is a poor one at best and a deadly one at worst. If we just put our reasoning on the table with these two items we determine where and how our lives will be spent here on earth, and the other where we will spend our eternity.
Because the important things require nuance, patience and understanding, and if we're not allowed to speak out our reasons and if we're not allowed a freedom of speech and thought we are doomed.
At one time a good debate between speakers was considered entertainment. That way two opposing views could do just that—put their ideas out there for an audience to judge for themselves good and evil.
I would leave for thought the scripture in Luke. As we look about us in this land of opportunity and bounty where mobs are shouting to 'burn it down'. Has anyone asked why? and what would they replace it with? Their only response is? They don't have anything. Just anarchy, burn, loot and riot.
And no, it isn't about something called white privilege. My sister prospered more than I in many ways because she prepared. Did she have more privilege than I? Maybe in part, but I still in my heart know it was my failing not her privilege that counted. I have seen people who have less education and less money than I, yet they have seized their opportunities and prospered while I was looking around saying what's going on?
And make no mistake about it, this is the green tree, do not let it slip into the dry...
Luke 23:
27) "And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him. 28) But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children. 29) For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck. 30) Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us. 31) For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?"
