Taking Care of Business
I'm still amazed at some of the responses to the turn of events of this year. I don't know what this man's business might be, but judging from the items on his table it has to do with food and cooking. What is the business of life?
I've been doing a lot of reading. One opinion I read just today was dealing with busy-ness. I'm quoting from a Facebook friend here, but I've said as much before: "The pace of our modern world makes it nearly impossible for working people to research the events and policies that shape their lives."
We have also seen reports where school officials wanted parents of their students (since some are doing learning online at home) sign a document that the parents would not monitor their child's learning. Some teachers have been complaining that parents of their students 'are dangerous' and how are these teachers going to be able to brainwash the students if the parents...especially conservative parents... have access to what is being taught?
In another light, as I have collected stories and researched the ways of the world, I've come across many different personal stories. The human suffering that runs through history lends credence to Doctor Jordan Peterson's words 'life is a struggle'.
Someone shared a picture of five smartly dressed children, four boys and one little girl. Two of the boys were close to the age of perhaps ten in their suits and ties, the smaller two were in short pants, sweaters and shirts. The little girl wore a nice dress, a bow in her neatly brushed hair. They are standing together as if it's a common everyday day. The tag is Orphanage Picture, apparently the children's mother had died from TB two years previous and the father's new wife didn't want them. I can only imagine the impact that must have had on this family.
The question I ask is what is our business here on this earth? As the quote goes, our business isn't to be happy. It is to be productive and perhaps to help ease the burdens of other travelers. One of the things Jordan Peterson emphasizes is personal responsibility. Governments across the world greedily eye parents' children and try to turn them into government property, but that's not what God intended. We can't reach into the past and snatch children from bad situations. However, children are our future, they are our hope. If we don't take the raising of our children back and government gets them our future and our hope will become a nightmare.
