Fixing the World
On a quest to fix the world...
Who would think they were up to such a task...even if they wanted to? A number of years ago there was the song "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing...
It's a whimsical song wishing for a perfect 'world' where people are happy and do good for one another. It is a happy song written in 1971, but things haven't gotten better. For some reason there was a generation that dreamed of 'peace, love, and harmony', and as such they believed their dream would just materialize—but it didn't.
People still play the song, 'Imagine' as the epitome of this is what we need to do, but it isn't either.
Lennon's song throws the ideas of no heaven, no hell, people living for today, no countries, nothing to kill or die for, no religion, people just living in peace. A brotherhood of man with no reason for greed or hunger...
There isn't a reason for greed— and hunger is a naturally occurring phenomenon when there is famine, yet there isn't always a reason for it either. The real reason for the inhumanity of humans is the human heart. Each person has the good and bad wolf, as it has been called. The difference is which one is fed—that's the one that grows.
The hard part is in fixing the world the first person that must be fixed is me. Now, I know that everyone is relieved except when I say 'me', I mean read that as me, not as you. So, we each individually are the me involved. As long as we are pointing the finger at someone else nothing will get done. We can only fix our self.
I enjoy listening to Jordan Peterson, a Canadian clinical psychologist. His ideas challenge the listener. Here are some of his tips: One: sit on your bed and ask your self what am I doing to absolutely screw up my life? What do I want and what could I do to change what I am now and get something better, and better than that to get something that is good for me?
Two: what am I doing that's wrong? We intrinsically know the difference between right and wrong. Find five small ways to begin putting your life in order. Keep looking for the ways to do the right thing. Pay attention to ways to be more productive to find peace within to be more noble and find your purpose.
Don't compare your self to others, compare your self to who you used to be, and look to how to improve. Treat your self as if you matter. Treat others as if they matter.
Here is a 35 minute speech from Jordan, which I did try to summarize:
