Reality Check

People have continued to wonder with this year, 'What's next'? We know when our dogs begin to worry something has gone wrong.

So far when we step outside our cat, Miss Kitty, just wants cat feed in her bowl. Our killer squirrels are still saving walnuts every fall...in short, animals are doing what they do every year.

We should stop and do a reality check. If our world changed and we had to make adjustments what would we adjust? We as a people began this year just like it was any other year. Someone lately has observed, "I can't believe I stayed up to cheer this year (2020) in."

Yet, this just might be an opportunity to stop and look over what were our previous habits. We can't live on just one paycheck? From 1929 to 1930 people's yearly income dropped in about half. Contrary to what is believed about the depression life did go on, it just went on differently.

Let's look a bit closer at our misconceptions. A family must have both parents working. There are a number of reasons that isn't true, but as some women have told me, 'it's easier to work outside the home than to be a stay at home mom'.

I always viewed being a stay at home mother as 'my job'. We lived outside city limits so we could raise a large garden, chickens, and a few other animals for our livelihood. I baked and cooked most of our food from scratch, sewed clothes, recycled, and other homecrafts to make ends meet. It just seems easier to work outside the home because it isn't something we are accustomed to. When you're at home and a problem develops you can't leave it for someone else to deal with.

The parent that says—I can't homeschool, my kids would drive me nuts, has a problem. The parent is the adult in the situation. Whether they homeschool or not, they are allowing their children to be unpleasant and aren't raising them right. It won't end well, and that's why when school comes around they can't wait to get the kids out of their hair.

Parents have been parenting for many centuries. Our problem is we've lost the pattern for parenting in this generation. It is easier to walk away, drop the kids at a child care facility which for a paltry sum (often paid for by our government extorting taxes) will put up with kids and teach them to stand in line at the water fountain...and other unpleasant habits.

Maybe we ought to realize there really is more to our lives than being a two job family. The responsibility of being a parent goes deep.

"But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." (Matthew 6:20-21 KJV)
