Hand and heart
Sheep are sheep. There are some animals that are too smart for their own good. They know what you want them to do but they just won't co-operate. Then there are sheep. Sheep don't know, and sheep don't care.
"And the LORD said unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod." (Exodus 4:2 KJV)
We know the story of Moses keeping his father-in-law's sheep in the wilderness. He's fine where he is and he tells God he doesn't want to go back to Egypt—send somebody else, God.
"And he said, O my Lord, send, I pray thee, by the hand of him whom thou wilt send. And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Moses, {and he said, Is not Aaron the Levite thy brother? I know that he can speak well. And also, behold, he cometh forth to meet thee: and when he seeth thee, he will be glad in his heart.} " (Exodus 4:13-14 KJV)
Still, Moses went and he led the Israelites back to the promised land, whether they wanted to go or not.
All through Joshua and Judges the leaders of Israel often didn't have much in their hand against their enemies, it was only through their God that they prevailed.
The Israelites shining moment in history came with the rise of King David, a man after God's own heart. It lasted through part of Solomon's reign until Solomon turned after women and their idols.
However, Solomon still achieved wisdom, wealth, and honor above his peers. Solomon had much resources at his beck and call—within his hand, but he didn't achieve beyond what God gave him.
In affect it shows that it isn't so much what we have in our hand as what we have in our heart.
