What Can You Do

"People don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care."

Sounds good, doesn't it? It has been the basis for much of the 'church work' we've been familiar with in our lives.

Consider that the word 'hospital' means, according to Merriam Webster:

"Middle English hospital, ospitale "residence for pilgrims and travelers, charitable institution providing residence for the poor and infirm," borrowed from..."

If you go back far enough, hospital has to do with 'hospitality' and caring for others.

But is that beginning statement true? A fellow foot-soldier who had been doing missionary work not just over seas but at home as well, once commented on this statement by saying, 'I've heard that phrase, but in all the time I've been doing this work I've never heard anyone say that to me.'

Now, yes, we are instructed to 'love one another', to 'do good unto all men, but especially to those of the household of faith', and the hospitals and many of the early charitable organizations were begun by Christians being servants of Christ by serving their fellow humans.

But, there is a difference between 'how much you know, and how much you care'...or is there?

For instance, do you need to know 'much' to care a lot or a little. When we are teaching salvation what are we 'knowing'?

A couple of scriptures come to mind here:

"But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men. For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called..." (1 Corinthians 1:23-26 KJV)

"For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God." (1 Corinthians 2:2-5 KJV)

"But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world." (Galatians 6:14 KJV)

What we are knowing is the magnitude of love God and Christ has for all of us. That is shown through the willingness of Christ to come, live amongst us and give his perfect life a sacrifice for us when we least deserved it.

How much you know and how much you care—it's not about me, or you, or what we give or do, and people that say, 'I don't care how much you know, until I know how much you care', are actually an affront to God.

How much did God and Jesus care?

John 3:16 "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
