Taste And See...
Today the warmth of summer is upon us. Just as the song, 'Summertime'
verbalizes so some of what makes summertime special, the very word holds potential.
Summertime is when the hope of springtime comes to fruition. Bees buzz, bumble, and pollinate. Buds blossom and burst into flower. Gardens planted in hope bring forth their wares.
The smells of the earth are everywhere. Corn in the field, hay with it's rich, newly mown aroma—smells rich and full permeate the air.
Yesterday Old Fuzzy brought in our first egg plant, sweet peppers, Anaheim, and paprika peppers. We've had some potatoes, fresh onions and green beans.
Old Fuzzy has also had to use a cover to keep the deer from eating our beets into the ground. Last year they ate everyone of our beets, first the tops, then the bulbs out of the ground.
The raccoons destroyed all but a small meal of our sweet corn. We didn't get our fence up soon enough. It was before the corn was ready, but the varmits had already caught a whiff.
When I was young we sometimes ate regular field corn when it was still tender, preparing it the same as we do sweet corn. After a certain stage that doesn't work, but...
We've also let sweet corn mature, dry, and then grind it for corn meal. I would like to get a flour grinder. So far we have used our blender, but it doesn't come out as fine as we would like.
This evening smelled mellow and summertime, like a potpourri of herbs and spices. Surely, the scripture fits:
