Who Are We

In the early 1980s we built a bermed earth-sheltered home. This was our last move— so we thought, and as such we also purchased an old upright piano. This piano, originally from the late 1890s, has now survived seven children's piano lessons and three additional moves as well.

It now sits forlorn, waiting patiently, somewhat like the Velveteen Rabbit.

On occasion we would need piano books from the music store about sixty miles away. Our oldest son would often sit down at one of their expensive models and play a current selection.

Beethoven's Fur Elise is usually a show stopper. It isn't a difficult piece to play...well, it would be for me, but...for mid-beginners, it isn't.

Our oldest child had several impressive songs he had memorized. He enjoyed the affect these displays had. When he began to play everyone in the store would stop to listen.

There is talent then there is talent. He had a charismatic quality that when he played it touched people.

A year after he'd left home, he was back visiting. I asked him to play something...there was always sheet music on the piano. He opened up the piano and after looking over the keys, he looked at me sadly. "I don't remember any of it..."

As I've written, the piano survived seven children. The last son was so much like the first. He studied piano for at least thirteen years. And he had the charismatic touch as well.

But alas, in many ways he too was like so many others. Things get left behind. We all left have things left behind Hopes? Dreams? Ideals?

It points to our foibles and flaws. All have a past. Things we should have left behind, and things we should have brought with us. But here we stand today.

The past is just that, the present we have, and the future may never be...one of the greatest lies that Satan has is 'there's still time. I'll do it later.'

And sadly, that's the way we are...

Ecclesiastes 11:4 "He that observeth the wind shall not sow; and he that regardeth the clouds shall not reap."
