Something For Nothing

FREE!

We see the advertisement or news shouted often these days.

Free health care, free college, free money...

It all sounds good but do we really want this free stuff?

For the last fifty years I have believed and taught 'there aren't any free lunches'. Which means if you get it for free you've already paid for it somewhere else.

This isn't about the freebie wanting segment of life, it's about all of us. Yes, most of us have days we would like for someone to pat us on the back and say, 'There, there, here's six million dollars and a life's supply of chocolate'.

Of course, six million dollars is harder to come by, but chocolate is more readily available...

So, there isn't a free lunch, but there are some things that are like chocolate—readily available:

Today we have an abundance of sunshine, the birds are singing, there's a gentle cool breeze, a peaceful easy feeling, the ability to make good choices and friendly neighbors.

Like the children's T.V. show, Mr. Roger's Neighborhood, it's a lovely day in the neighborhood. No, it isn't perfect. People aren't all wonderful even friendly neighbors. Problems come and go.

When my children were young and I would help them with something they would often say, 'Thanks, mom'.

I would laugh and say, 'You're welcome, honey. All I ask is your undying love and devotion.' I was joking, but not really.

Family. When I was growing up there was an unspoken bond between family members. You took care of your own. Family was free, but it wasn't 'free'.

Galatians 4:31 "Wherefore, brethren, we are not children of a handmaid, but of the freewoman.

5:1 For freedom did Christ set us free: stand fast therefore, and be not entangled again in a yoke of bondage. 5:13 For ye, brethren, were called for freedom; only use not your freedom for an occasion to the flesh, but through love be servants one to another. Gal 5:14 For the whole law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself."
