Spilt Water
2 Samuel 14:14 "For we must needs die, and are as water spilt on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again; neither doth God respect any person: yet doth he devise means, that his banished be not expelled from him."
No matter if the ground is full of water or very dry, when you spill water on the ground it's gone.
The words from 2 Samuel come from an "an old wise woman of Tekoa" speaking to King David. She's been sent by Joab to ask the king to bring his son Absalom home from banishment.
We read in 2 Samuel chapters 14 through 19 how that played out, but in real time no one saw that part of the story.
All that Joab knows is that the king is missing his son, but...
That's the way real time works. Only God knows how things will work out. We aren't told everything will always be rosy and wonderful. We are told to trust.
No one knows how the story would have played out had Joab not worked to bring Absalom home.
Perhaps Absalom had changed during the years he had been banished, or maybe his arrogance had been polished to a higher degree.
Absalom was a neighbor to Joab, and it didn't take long for them to become reacquainted after his return. (2 Samuel 14:28-33)
And the rest became history. His story. Some don't believe in God, they don't believe there is a point to life.
As the Apostle Paul said in 1 Corinthians 15:30 Why do we also stand in jeopardy every hour? 31) I protest by that glorifying in you, brethren, which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily.
32) If after the manner of men I fought with beasts at Ephesus, what doth it profit me? If the dead are not raised, let us eat and drink, for to-morrow we die.
Matthew 10:29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? and not one of them shall fall on the ground without your Father: 30) but the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31) Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows. 32) Every one therefore who shall confess me before men, him will I also confess before my Father who is in heaven.
