The Seer
Tomorrow being Saint Patrick's Day I thought I'd get in touch with that side of my heritage.
This pretty picture has one flaw, it seems to me. Most of my peeps had red hair. Magill, McCormick, Jamison, Firebaugh they had several things in common, and red—pardon me—auburn hair was one.
Heritage—What's in a name? The Bard, Shakespeare, asks that question in the long ago, and it is still echoing today.
Every heritage has good people as well as not so good people in the mix.
"Mom, I think I'd like for my family crest..."
"Wait a minute, Buddy, that's not possible." I stop my son. We've been studying about castles and the Middle ages, and whatnot.
Buddy has always been a dreamer and lover of things ancient like castles and knights and whatnot. As we are studying about family crests and the crusades his interest is piqued.
"Well, Buddy, family crests and such were earned. You can't just 'make them up'. If you weren't born with them today, you're out of luck."
He's not too happy about that, except he has a somewhat caveat.
"Your (great, great, great) grandmother Henrianna and her son Samuel came from County Down. She was an Ewert and that clan is said to be one of the oldest in Ireland..." *I don't know about that, only what I've read. *The name Henrianna is also spelled Henrietta Anna-her father's name was Henri so...)
We spend time looking at the family crest and he is content about the being out of luck and not able to 'choose' the items for his crest.
Yet, heritage is an interesting study. Part of the Ewert family crest is the 'open hand', meaning generosity. I see this trait in our family still to this day.
There are a lot of things that go into families and their heritage. When my father-in-law passed away the five descendants came together and each one voiced their wishes.
Each one was counted as an individual with intelligence. Decisions were made, things came together without bickering or ugliness.
This of course, was my husband's family, not Ewerts, but they show in many ways the same spirit. That was close to eight years ago, and I've since come to appreciate that spirit of co-operation. It's a rare bird.
I have knowledge of a recent case involving two grown (sixty-ish aged) children who have received a million dollars apiece already. They will inherit another million dollars apiece when everything is finished, except they are suing the administrator because they had to pay taxes on their inheritance.
I'll say right here, I believe those taxes ARE wrong, but it isn't the administrator's fault. They should be suing the government...
Who knows where we will be in 'ages and ages hence'? Heritage reaches before and behind.
Matthew 7:24 "Every one therefore that heareth these words of mine, and doeth them, shall be likened unto a wise man, who built his house upon the rock: 25) and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and if fell not: for it was founded upon the rock."
