I Have These Days

I believe most people have these kind of days. Days when trying to pin down one thought or idea doesn't come easy.

The snow this morning was so pretty and peaceful. We were out of bird feed last week during the horrible cold snap.

Usually when we are out of feed, the birds will sit on the feeder looking at my kitchen window as if they are tapping their toes.

Perhaps they had all ready done that trick and we never replaced it, but during the cold snap I saw a cardinal perch in the tree looking at the feeder all huddled up.

They weren't tapping their toes, just looking destitute as if we had let them down somehow. Old Fuzzy pulled out the moldy money and bought some sustenance for the poor creatures.

I was quite penitent, but even after we had filled the feeder it was some time before I saw my beloved cardinals returning. They are such pretty, quiet birds.

I don't know what it is about me and ovens. A year ago last September my last oven went out in a flaming fire.

This new oven has now developed a glitch in the control panel, and we are awaiting the repairman. Since it is still cold outside it isn't a bad day for finding chores inside to work on while waiting for said repairman.

I decided to make biscuits yesterday. Since when we turn on the oven—I can turn the oven on, and adjust the temperature up, but not turn it down or off—so I try to do a bit more baking than just one thing.

Last night for supper we had biscuits and vegetable stew, and I made chocolate chip tea cookies for dessert.

When our second son got married my daughter's wedding present to them was a special cookbook of our family favorites that she made.

It has been around for quite sometime now, about twenty-three years I think. She has expressed the idea of renovating it and expanding it.

I'm beginning to organize with this in mind on my end, since I'm one of the few who has an original copy.

In the future when we get closer to having an actual copy it may be something I can wrest a few copies of for a special 'give away' to some of my subscribers.

I'm throwing this out there for any who might be interested, and for any who might be wanting to subscribe. Here is a copy of the recipe for the above biscuits:

MOM'S CRUSTY HOT BISCUITS

2&1/4 cups all purpose flour

4 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar, 1/2 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons sugar, 1/3 cup shortening

2/3 cup milk, 1 egg

Sift together dry ingredients. Cut shortening into mixture to make coarse crumbs. Add milk, then the egg. Mix with fork until dough follows fork around the bowl. Knead on floured surface five or six times. Roll or pat into 1/2 inch thickness. Cut, and place on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake at 450 degrees, 10 to 15 minutes depending on your oven and your preference. Makes 12-16 biscuits...so the recipe says. ;)

Ecclesiastes 5:9 "Moreover the profit of the earth is for all: the king himself is served by the field. 10 ) He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance, with increase: this also is vanity. 11) When goods increase, they are increased that eat them; and what advantage is there to the owner thereof, save the beholding of them with his eyes? 12) The sleep of a laboring man is sweet, whether he eat little or much; but the fulness of the rich will not suffer him to sleep."
