Funny In Mind
To be, or not to be: that is the question: Whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to suffer The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, Or to take arms against a sea of troubles, And by opposing end them?
Hamlet, Act III Scene I
Today is one of those days when Prince Hamlet and I have our share of troubles. My biggest trouble at present seems to be my wrestling with global warming.
To be honest, I'm a denier. Especially at the moment. I've read we are supposed to be treated to negative 60 degrees today some places in the Midwest . That's below zero.
It is supposed to warm up tomorrow to minus 2 degrees. That's still below zero, and either one is cold. I'd say frigid...how many synonyms for 'really cold' can I get here. Most schools in this area have been called out today.
A number of years ago I read an article in the Readers' Digest about an old Eskimo woman. I have used this analogy on more than one occasion, and probably will again.
Since it has been so long ago, and if I have saved the article it has hidden itself. So, I as usual have to repeat the gist of it. The old woman said she did not fear winter because she knew it was a fierce battle to survive. She was ready to do battle.
She feared summer more. The pleasant sunshine and warm temperatures had a way of lulling her into a comfortable, lackadaisical, lethargic sleepiness. She was more concerned that death would creep up and catch her as she sat snoozing in her tent door.
Someone asked me several years ago 'how do you keep warm in weather like that? I told her, we put on every item in our wardrobe and try to look elegant.
Sunday was cold. Sunday I had on a heavy winter skirt and two sweaters, one scarf, and five pairs of long underwear...
Okay, I may have over-exaggerated the five pairs of long underwear. But not the rest. I've given up today. Every item in my wardrobe is no match for the draft wafting in the windows and doors.
I read a bulletin yesterday that said: 'your furnace may not keep up with this cold. Turn the thermostat up a few degrees'.
How funny. I can assure who ever wrote that that is correct, it isn't keeping up. Fifty-seven is not comfortable, but it needs to be up more than a few degrees.
I know this too shall pass. By Saturday it's supposed to be 40 degrees above zero. These things come and go. Although the huge swings don't happen often, they remind us to be thankful for more normal temperatures.
You can very well believe you won't catch me snoozing in my tent door today. Have a great day, stay warm and stay safe.
Philippians 4:11 "Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therein to be content. 12) I know how to be abased, and I know also how to abound: in everything and in all things have I learned the secret both to be filled and to be hungry, both to abound and to be in want. 13 I can do all things in him that strengtheneth me."
