Not About Effort...
Have you ever thought, 'If I could just work harder I'd..."
Well often there's supposed to be some great payoff at the end of the thought, but I'm here to tell you that my grandma had a saying that covered that idea as well.
Her thought went like, "What you don't have in your head, you have to have in your heels."
What she was saying was smart people don't have to work as hard as not so smart people. I have to admit, too many times I've fit into the latter category.
The thing is the people that work 10x smarter don’t work on the same axis. It’s not about more effort. It’s about more insight.
Our 'kitchen' wasn't at all a normal kitchen. The cook stove was in what we called the dining room. Our cupboards that we kept our dishes in, our counter (we called it the 'base' for some reason) that we mixed cakes etc. on, our mixing bowls, all of this was in the dining room.
Really the only thing we did in the kitchen was wash the dishes, store pans, and odds and ends. The kitchen did have two refrigerators. There was a separate pantry room on the east of the kitchen.
I mention this only because when we washed and dried the dishes we then carried them back out to the dining room to put away.
My grandfather would on occasion make comments as we carried as many dishes as we could possibly juggle 'you can make more than one trip'.
To which my grandmother would say, 'What you don't have in your head...' Of course they were both right.
Quite a few years ago I realized we were never going to be able to work hard enough to save enough money for retirement. It just wasn't going to happen. I began to kick around ways to increase our savings.
I never came up with a winning game. But they say Colonel Sanders didn't start his KFC until he was sixty-six. Therefore, we're still a few months ahead of the lottery.
I have believed it is important to prepare for the future, and especially for retirement or specifically old age. We have paid into Social Security, but we all know that isn't enough.
And the point is—What's it all about? First, yes, young people should begin saving early. Second, find ways— outside of the box (legally)— to make extra money. Stuff money into your mattress...wait I was just checking if you were reading.
Saving money is tricky. Being an entrepreneur is trickier. There are those that sell products on line and do a good profit. All it takes is being 10X smarter, and a bit of time and chance.
