The More Things Change the More They Stay the Same
Every year about this time of the year, summer passes into winter.
Yes, that is correct. Summer does not pass into autumn. It's like playing Monopoly. You pass go and collect...in this instance snow. It does flicker back and forth between summer-winter-summer-and maybe autumn for several weeks. Usually after it has frozen all of my garden stuff into useless garbage.
After that it has about a month of decent weather. If the garden hadn't frozen on the one night of cold weather, you could be harvesting into November more or less.
All of these things happen on a regular basis. Year after year, and when this time of year shows up I always act/feel surprised. I look like, 'where did this come from?'
Same place it did last year. And the year before that, and...ad infinitum.
It is a phenomena that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Some folks say we don't need the Bible because it's outdated. We are so much more advanced than our ancestors.
As nice as that sounds it's not true. Our inventions have continued to be invented. We drive automobiles instead of Conestoga wagons, wear clothes made out of new material blends, eat different kinds of food, but—
Human characteristics are still the same. Same love, hate, good, evil—it's still all here. People are still the same inside.
And for sure, what we think on is what we become. As it says in the Gospels:
Matthew 12:43 But the unclean spirit, when he is gone out of the man, passeth through waterless places, seeking rest, and findeth it not. 44) Then he saith, I will return into my house whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. 45) Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more evil than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man becometh worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this evil generation.
We must be careful to fill our lives with good things. Does it matter? Even if there were no judgement, no God, no Jesus, who would choose to be evil on purpose?
Of course there are those who do choose, plan, and devise evil schemes, and I wonder why ever for? It doesn't improve their lives or ultimately make them happy. It doesn't make anyone better, but they do what they do. Like a bent twig that turns into a twisted tree trunk.
Galatians 5:21 "envyings, drunkenness, revellings, and such like; of which I forewarn you, even as I did forewarn you, that they who practise such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God."
Those who choose to practice evil should be aware that it will come back to them. In the New Testament it tells us 'What ye sow, so shall ye reap'. Or in the Old Testament:
Ecclesiastes 11:1 "Cast thy bread upon the waters; for thou shalt find it after many days."
