Crazy
Crazy is the weekend when we are preparing for a get together such as Mother's Day. Then we have the Monday after. I began last week getting pictures ready to post of my projects and how they've been coming along.
This picture of our cold frame was supposed to be down here, but true to my computer ability and excellent technique, it has managed to put itself up there. Still, when I speak of a cold frame this is the animal I'm referencing. This is a picture from a few years ago of the tail end of hardening off of a much larger batch of plants.
This cold frame is not fancy, it's made from scraps and a window leftover from another project. In this picture the window is slid up and a light screen placed over the bottom slot. There is enough room for four flats of plants, although this one only shows (probably) two flats and a few odd boxes. When the weather gets hot during the days the screen keeps the air flow going and the temp in the box down. Our weather is already settled so after a week in this box the plants will be ready to go into the garden. Otherwise the outdoors is too much of a shock without the 'hardening off' process, and many plants won't survive or will be set back.
Our neighbor, Mr. Yarrington, has a much smaller plot for his garden, yet he provides a much better supply of produce than our larger one. If he is agreeable at some point I'd like to have one of my videographers du jour get a tour of his garden and some of his practices on record to share. We have adapted some of his wonderful techniques.
