People Are Asking
When I woke up the song 'God Bless America' was running through my mind. Usually if I have a song running in my mind when I wake up it's a spiritual song. In a sense God Bless America is a spiritual song in that it is invoking God's blessings on our country. As our president Ronald Reagan once said, 'If we ever forget that we are One Nation Under God, then we will be a nation gone under.'
There is an element in this country that would like to stamp God out of our remembrance. Yet when some tragedy strikes voices (some of the same who are stamping) are raised in the cry, Where is God? Why isn't He taking care of....'
Much of our problem comes from our devaluation of human life. It began with the Roe vs. Wade decision. We were told that at conception that wasn't a 'baby', it was a fetus. It couldn't feel pain and was just a blob of tissue. Of course that's not true, but many believed it. Ultrasounds have helped to bring about a change in that belief.
However that is only part of the picture. When Darwin's theory of evolution, and book, Origin of the Species came out there were several things that didn't happen. It was not reiterated as a 'theory'. I'll say that again, it was not marked as a 'theory', but was embraced by scientists who were looking for a path around/away from God and His creation. Not all scientists accepted evolution as even a respectable theory. Many very reputable scientists from its beginning until today have rejected it.
What does evolutionary theory and abortion have to do with our current culture and its disrespect for and of life? Evolution asserts that human beings are just 'higher forms' of animal life. Of course scripture tells us:
"And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. And God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. " (Genesis 1:26-27 ASV)
In other words human beings are created (not to look like God, but...) with a spirit/soul. Some people believe animals are dumb beasts that they don't love, hate, or have emotions. That isn't the point. Human beings have those emotions, but they also have a moral compass.
At one time we in this country had a cultural moral compass, then 'Progressives' took control of our public schools and began teaching 'There is no real right or wrong. It's all relative.' As someone in my field of acquaintance would describe it, that's a bunch of hooey. Any thinking person can and does recognize there are absolutes in this world.
People are asking when these heinous acts happen what can we do? First we have to realize we need a defense against further atrocities and we need that defense now. Some have suggested instead of having our children in sitting duck scenarios of gun-free zones, if not armed guards, at least those who have concealed carry permits, let them carry discretely. Some of our teachers, school workers, bus drivers are ex-military as well as concealed carry. That is for now. Second, acknowledge the ignorance of the theory of our hedonistic relativism philosophies. Begin to encourage honoring God again instead of trying to tear public school students away from God. And as parents we need to get back to Sunday and mid-week Bible study, prayer, and worship. Putting God back into our society/culture, teaching there is a right and wrong, and God's standard is important is a minimum step.
The whole book of Proverbs is full of gems. We hear often:
"Righteousness exalteth a nation; But sin is a reproach to any people." (Proverbs 14:34 ASV)
"If my people, who are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." (2 Chronicles 7:14 ASV)
